Why does it have to end?

… the last one of the season …

I guess the end of the seasonal fruits and veggies has to come… but it sure hurts!

I remember reading that I could eat all the fruit I wanted. Since the Whole Fruit was consumed, therefore giving the body the unprocessed fruit in the original packaging, and the fiber made it a good thing, and not the bad thing the manufacturers of juices and processed fruit items want to to think.

I have bought sacks full of Texas Oranges, in season, that were so good, I would eat them skin and all… And eat several in a sitting.

And that sitting was almost all the time, since I drove sometimes hundreds of miles a day while ‘at work’.

At the end of that season of the Texas Oranges, they were no longer available at the stores, and sure not for sale at nine cents each.

I went through withdrawal. So I went to the next seasonal fruit. It just makes good sense that fruit comes off the tree or plant, in a season, and it would be a good time to eat it fresh, and try to preserve some for the ‘off season’.

Well, through these last two plus years, I have done the best I can at watermelon during its normal season. Not the seedless fancy kind, I am saying the watermelon with seeds in them.

I know the stores always offer the personal sized melons yu could carry in your pocket, but, no thanks….. I want a local 50 pounder that thumps just right, has a big orange spot on the side that rested on the ground, and scars on the outer skin where evidence of healthy pollination occurred, as well as teeth marks from Coyotes testing for the sweetest melons in the patch.

I usually pick out a good melon, I am proud to say.

But folks, it is the end of the season he in North Texas.

It is a sad day.

What is now needed is an abundant crop of Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit to come on at twenty cents each, like they were last year.

Remind me to tell you why Grapefruit are one of the major reasons why I am not on Statin Drugs today.

But that is another story.

For today, respect is give to the passing of local watermelon season of 2017.

RIP
